Protect Yourself from Electronic Payment Scams

There is a recent increase in activity in scams related to debit cards and payment transfers. We are advising you of this so that you can become better educated to protect yourself and your family. The Savings Bank uses the highest level of security across all our services, however, scammers are continually looking for new opportunities to steal money from bank customer accounts.

Scammers spoof a bank phone number and attempt to convince the customer to provide their personal information or to take a specific action. These scammers may already have victims’ information by studying their social media. Please avoid social media survey questions such as what the make of your first car was, as those are often the same questions you include in your account security profile. Please also be mindful of the phrases and other information you use for usernames and passwords.

One specific activity that has picked up is that scammers, posing as a bank, may indicate that there has been a withdrawal from an account and ask that the customer transfer the money back to him or herself through Zelle® to “reverse” it. The transfer is then intercepted by the scammer.

The Saving Bank does not ask customers to transfer money between accounts in this manner or request sensitive account information. Further, always be cautious even if the caller ID says The Savings Bank or another financial institution. Look up the contact information online and reach out to the bank directly. Contact law enforcement immediately if you think you’ve been a victim of a scam.

If the scammers are posing as being connected to the bank, please contact The Savings Bank Call Center at 800-246-2009. For more information about scam calls and texts, visit the FCC Consumer Help Center and the FCC Scam Glossary. You can also file a complaint about such scams at
